One of the many technological wonders these days is the smartphone you are probably holding in your hands as you read this. Smartphone owners are constantly amazed at how well websites look and how well they function given that they are viewed on such a small screen. As a mobile web developer/designer, I have the good fortune to create websites from start to finish.
While most of us in this field are either mobile web developers or mobile web designers, I am both. I am also an independent contractor who can build a mobile website for you or your business or organization, one that is responsive and loads fast. Not only that, but since I am an independent contractor, I can probably do it for less than some of the larger companies that specialize in mobile website development. What Does a Mobile Web Developer Do?
Typically, a mobile website begins with the design phase, and since I do that myself, I’ll address it shortly. But once the website has been conceived in terms of the look and graphic elements that make it up, I put on my mobile web developer hat and write the code that enables the website to become a visual reality. This involves significant education and skills with different software applications and tools.
Here’s some of the software skills and tools I bring to this task:
- Front end development. Here I’ll primarily use HTML, CSS and JavaScript to implement the design I’ve created so you can see it on your device.
- Source code management. This is how I set up the managing of changing documents and programs within the website by utilizing tools like CVS, Git, and SVN.
- IDE. I create an integrated development environment to consolidate the tools used within the website with VS Code, Sublime and WebStorm.
- Front end framework. To speed up my work process I’ll use React, Bootstrap or jQuery.

What Does a Mobile Web Designer Do?
As a website designer I’ll create a website that is not only completely functional in purpose, but is also visually pleasing to the eye of the user. This is important because if your website doesn't invite the user in, and keep them there, they’re liable to move on to another website or platform.
Here are some of the software programs and tools I use to create a virtual wonderland of typography and visual elements for your mobile website:
Design tools. To create your mobile website I’ll use graphic applications like Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Sketch, and, as a Prototyping tool, Mockplus and UXPin.
As you can see it takes much skill and experience to design and develop quality mobile websites.
